Garden Maintenance
100 hours
Statement of Attainment
10 lessons
Learn how to effectively maintain a garden while reducing the amount of time, labour and costs involved.
Proper garden maintenance will cost you both time and money. Fortunately, there are shortcuts to help you have a good-looking garden without spending a huge amount of time or money on your property.
We usually think of garden maintenance as a summer priority when lawns, weeds and plants grow vigorously but even in winter a garden may deteriorate without regular maintenance.
Plants that are fed well are healthier, resist disease and pest problems, and generally require less maintenance. If a plant is unhealthy, it may be because of a lack of good nutrition, but it can just as easily be because of something else. Healthy plants resist pest and disease problems.
Heat, cold, wind, rain, frost, shade, pollution and other environmental problems can have disastrous effects on plants. Plant varieties vary in their tolerance of these conditions, for example the heat which might kill one plant may simply slow the growth of another. Some plants are very adaptable others not.
This course will show you how to have a healthy garden year round!

Statement of Attainment
10 lessons
Select, install and maintain irrigation systems for home gardens, parks or ornamental horticulture.
Water is essential to plant growth and is often the major limitation to productivity. Irrigation is now playing a more important role in horticulture as well as home gardens than ever before.
Irrigation can enable plants or turf to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible. It can supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or it can ensure that there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing most rapidly. The value of irrigation can vary greatly from year to year depending on the distribution of rainfall during the growth season.
Irrigation at appropriate times can also improve the quality of turf or the general health of garden plants.
This course that covers the design, installation, maintenance, operation and evaluation of simple irrigation systems. It is similar to Bht 204, Bht 210 or Bag213, but focuses on irrigation for parks, home gardens, and other ornamental horticulture areas.

Government, nursery and private positions are more demanding then they ever were; employers are becoming increasingly selective choosing personnel with broad horticultural knowledge and less emphasis is placed on the 'learn on the job' approach of years gone by. Education is imperative if you expect to compete in this field and those that have the knowledge will also have the best chance of reaping the rewards.

A sick plant may have one or several causes at the same time.
There are thousands of possible causes which can contribute to a plant's problems. More often than not, there are several factors involved. Minor diseases or environmental problems may weaken the plant, making it susceptible to some more major (obvious) disorder. When you inspect a plant for problems, you should systematically consider all of the things which might possibly be going wrong. This course provides the foundation for inspecting diagnosing and treating all types of problems.
This subject develops a firm understanding of plant health, the systematic identification of health problems in plants, and the techniques for control of those problems.

Take the next step in your career: develop practical skills in the management of a variety of horticultural situations required of the horticultural manager or the management of your own business that you would normally learn working under the supervision of a horticultural expert. A step on from Practical Horticulture 1 but a course that can be taken in its own right by those with fundamental horticultural knowledge.
Following is an excerpt from lesson 1.
Work planning and project management is an important aspect of the type of work that would be generally carried out by the professional horticulturist. It may be in diverse areas within the horticulture industry i.e. a planting program, plant sales program, landscape project, re-vegetation project, sports or turf management, irrigation and drainage systems implementation, production planning (crops and nursery), conservation of natural resource areas, conserve a heritage area and so on. Project management may be under the broad direction of superiors in certain situations however self directed application of knowledge that has substantial depth is expected at this level.
Some supervision is required for this course by an independent horticultural expert such as your work manager or other expert. The course contains all the tips to develop excellent practical skills in the management of a variety of horticultural situations. It covers subject areas such as: horticultural calculations, propagation management, hard and soft landscape management, planning - identifying needs for management of horticultural sites, identifying plant tissue and much more.

GET USEFUL: BECOMES A SKILLED AND KNOWLEDGABLE PLANT PROPAGATOR
Good Propagators are one of the most valued staff members in any production nursery. Their speed and strike rate will determine the profitability of the entire nursery. Because of their pivotal role; good propagators tend to always be in demand in the nursery industry, and their job security is high.
To be a good propagator, you need to know how to identify a wide range of plants; and be able to understand and make judgements about what parts of the plant to use and what techniques to apply in order to propagate them effectively. These things are taught strongly in this course.
An effective propagator also needs to be naturally fast and agile in the way they use their hands. These "motor skills" come easily to some people; and far less easily to others. If your fine motor skills are not fast and good, you may reconsider whether a career as a propagator is right for you. If you are great with your hands though and lover working with plants, this could be a dream occupation.
This highly relevant course is based on four core modules which focus on propagation, seed propagation, cutting propagation and horticulture, student may then choose 2 electives to build upon this knowledge further.

Would you like to work with trees? To work in the challenging and stimulating arboriculture industry you need fundamental knowledge and understanding of trees, their amenity value and their indisputable value to the environment. Such knowledge includes the maintenance and management of trees; tree assessment for health, monetary or environmental value, fundamentals of planting, transplanting, pruning, site planning, identification and treatment of pests diseases, nutritional and other disorders, tree surgery, aftercare and advice and tree removal.
Trees are the longest living organisms on earth, they benefit the community and improve our quality of life in almost immeasurable ways. They create the oxygen we breathe, reduce air and water pollution and uptake water to help reduce storm water run-off. They also provide shade, beauty, sound barriers, windbreaks and reduce summer urban heat.
If a tree is growing in a favourable environment and its genetic make-up also favours that environment it will be healthy and grow to optimum size and shape. A knowledgeable arborist understands that this is not always the case and sometimes, through environmental or other factors, trees will need help. They will also know that working with trees is about more then felling them; once a tree is removed it cannot be put back! Arborists are there to encourage and maintain healthy, growing trees where at all possible; their work therefore has an important role in the community.
Opportunities in this growing industry include employment in private specialist contracting businesses, self-employment, local and state government positions. Activities include the maintenance and care of trees and large shrubs in private gardens, public parks, reserves, bushland reserves, recreational areas, industrial complexes, housing estates and institutions.
This certificate focuses on the culture and care of trees, providing a sound foundation for any working or hoping to work with tree establishment or maintenance. Unlike many other courses in arboriculture, this course also provides a broad foundation across all aspects of horticulture.

Start an Exceptional Career Here!
Professional horticulturists are a very different breed to other people. This is a career which is all too often more of a passion for people than a job. Gardening is arguably the most popular "hobby" in the developed world; and for those of you who are lucky enough to persue and complete a diploma such as this; you are likely to keep learning about and practicing gardening whether as a job, or a passion, for as long as you live. One only needs to look at the nurserymen, garden writers and radio hosts to see active horticulturists come in all ages through to people in their 80's.
What Do You Need to Reach Your Full potential?
- With over 100,000 different plants in cultivation; you need to get to know your plants (maybe not 100,000 ...but good horticulturists can identify over 1,000 and continue learning new plants all their life)
- Growing Plants is a Science, so a firm grounding in soil science, botany, plant pathology and such things is always important
- Most horticulturists have specialised areas of interest (eg. Nursery, turf, landscaping, etc); but the best horticulturists know a little about everything; and can adapt as demands change in industry. The broadly trained horticulturist will always find a good job; but they might move from one area to another throughout their career.

Soil management - the basis for healthy plants and conservation for future generations.
The Soil is a living biological ecosystem that must be managed to the benefit of the crop and to the broader ecosystem of the region. The reason we investigate soil and its characteristics it to understand it in relation to plant growth, how to manage and manipulate it without causing damage, how to improve it generally or how to modify it for the growing of specific crops. Good soil conditions are critical to the healthy growth of most plants.
Nutrient levels, pH, salinity, depth, texture (properties of sand and clay), structure (form and arrangement), porosity (air space), consistence (the ability of soil to withstand rupture) and even colour can affect plant growth independently or interdependently.
Over eight lessons this course will develop an understanding of physical and chemical properties of soils, the ability to carry out simple tests and determine soil characteristics, and to decide ways of treating a soil to improve its ability to grow plants.
This course provides a credit in ACS qualifications, accredited through IAR
C, and also prepares you to sit for RHS modules and acquire credits in the RHS advanced certificate or diploma.
The course is specifically designed for ornamental gardens, landscaping, container growing, and turf situations.

Would you like to work in a field that helps the environment? Environmental rehabilitation of degraded landscapes and contaminated sites is an important and growing field - this course covers the fundamentals required to start or advance your career.
The significance of caring for the environment has been receiving more and more attention in recent times as we come to understand the importance of limited resources and the effects of human activities on the environment. The desertification, erosion and general degradation of once fertile lands is prompting us to investigate why and how these processes have occurred. It has also lead to research into how we can reverse and stop further damage to our environment.
Natural forests are amongst the most stable and productive ecosystems. We need to plant and conserve forests for their conservation value, to help maintain healthy air, soil and water and for their potential to provide food, forage, fuel, timber and even medicines.
This course is designed for people working or wanting to work with environmental rehabilitation and contaminated sites recovery. It develops an understanding of environmental systems and the rehabilitation of degraded landscapes. You will learn about seed collection, storage and germination, propagation, plant selection, establishment techniques, and controlling pest and disease after planting.

Weed Control

Learn about effective weed control
In horticultural practice, if weeds are to be controlled, it is critical that they are accurately identified when young. However, weeds are notorious for their diversity and resilience. These two characteristics have made weeds attractive as garden plants in countries to which they are not native.
Young weeds are far easier to control than older and more established weeds. There are many different ways of controlling weed growth, and the effectiveness of each technique is related to the varieties of weeds being controlled. Some chemicals, for instance will effectively kill certain weeds when they are in the early stages of growth, but will not control other types of weeds. You may need to be able to distinguish between types of weeds to determine whether the chemical will or will not work.
Over eight lessons you will learn to identify and effectively control weeds using both chemical and non-chemical control methods (mulching, burning, mowing); how to use spray equipment and the safety procedures which should be followed.
