Module Purpose

Successful completion of this module will enable the learner to develop management

strategies for clerical and financial operations in a recreation or fitness environment.

 

Pre-requisites

Learners doing the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies course must complete this

module as a core study before starting stream or elective studies.

 

Recreation Administration and Management II is normally seen as a pre-requisite for this

module within the Advanced Diploma in Recreation Studies.

 

 

This unit may also be taken individually in its own right.

 

Pre-requisite is Recreation Administration and Management II.

 

Relationship to Competency Standards

All tasks shall comply with the relevant practices and procedures set out by industrial awards and relevant Australian standards.

NB: Some competencies covered by Business Operations unit.

 

Content

Focus should be on the learning outcomes and not on content. Some topics may not

require in-depth teaching in this module as they will be addressed fully elsewhere

(such as Business Studies and Computer Studies).

 

In achieving the learning outcomes, the following topics should be addressed:

* financial records (parts of QFSR ITAB)

* budgets

* legal reporting

* liaising

* managing documents

* resource library formation

* information technology.

 

The learner will visit different locations, such as health clubs, gymnasiums,

recreation centres, sportsgrounds and clubs, to research, photograph and specify those

facilities as the basis for assignment questions.

Assessment method

The learning outcomes may be assessed through:

* essay;

* short answer and multiple choice questions;

* written assignments;

* illustrations;

* practical tasks;

* mathematical calculations;

* examination of 1.5 hours.

 

Conditions of assessment

Assessment is based on successful completion of all set tasks, assignments and any other assessment method listed above. Examinations will consolidate material taught in lessons to assess the learning progress of the learner. It will also act as a method of ensuring learners meet the outcomes.

 

 

Learning Outcome 1

 

Learning Outcome

Analyse financial records.

 

Assessment Criteria

1.1 List financial details needed to properly analyse the financial status of two different

specified recreation organisations.

1.2 Write a procedure for purchasing that complies with Quality Assurance

Standard 9002.

1.3 Compare income and expenditure with budget allocations, in a given case study.

1.4 Explain the monitoring of financial records to determine trends in a given workplace, over a period of several years.

Learning Outcome 2

 

Learning Outcome

Control a budget for a recreation service or production of a recreation product.

 

Assessment Criteria

2.1 List categories of income and expenditure for three different specified recreation

services or products.

2.2 Explain the significance of cash flow in preparing a budget for a specified workplace.

2.3 Prepare an annual budget for a section of an organisation or business,

detailing all costs associated with provision of a selected product or service.

2.4 Explain the processes involved in budgeting in a specified government

or public organisation which serves the recreation industry.

2.5 Write an organisational procedure to control expenditure relative to available

revenue, hence maintaining cash flow.

2.6 Develop a journal book general ledger to be used in a specified recreation enterprise.

Learning Outcome 3

Learning Outcome

Meet legal reporting requirements in relation to financial management.

 

Assessment Criteria

3.1 List statutory reporting requirements for different types of organisations.

3.2 Prepare an annual return for a company, in accordance with legal requirements.

3.3 Prepare an income tax return, in accordance with legal requirements.

3.4 Prepare a fringe benefits tax return, to conform with legal requirements.

Learning Outcome 4

 

Learning Outcome

Develop funding opportunities for recreation organisations.

 

Assessment Criteria

4.1 List potential funding sources for different types of projects.

4.2 Explain procedures to apply for funding through government departments, charitable trusts and other sources.

4.3 Prepare a submission to an established funding program, seeking funds for

a recreation industry enterprise.

4.4 Write a procedure to control management of sponsorship funds within a specified

organisation.

Learning Outcome 5

 

Learning Outcome

Liaise with senior management, in a recreation industry workplace.

 

Assessment Criteria

5.1 Explain different management structures in three different recreation industry

workplaces, including:

*Local government

*Private club (eg. golf club or health club)

*A specified tourist industry facility.

5.2 Differentiate between responsibilities in relation to financial management within

different organisations.

5.3 Explain the scope of a board of directors in financial management.

5.4 Prepare a financial report from senior management to a board of directors.

5.5 Prepare a submission to senior management, in a specified situation, to

obtain approval for a new service in a recreation facility.

Learning Outcome 6

 

Learning Outcome

Manage documents in a recreation industry workplace.

 

Assessment Criteria

6.1 Write two procedures for document control and document changes to conform

with the Quality Assurance Standard 9002.

6.2 List documents required in the operational management of different

organisations.

6.3 List software packages appropriate for information and presentation requirements of producing documentation.

6.4 Design two different complex documents, designed to achieve specified management tasks in a recreation workplace.

Learning Outcome 7

 

Learning Outcome

Establish a library resource collection for a recreation workplace.

 

Assessment Criteria

7.1 List minimum library resource requirements for different organisations including:

-A gymnasium

-A swimming centre

-A specified sporting facility

7.2 Explain two alternative catalogue systems for library resource collections.

7.3 Write a procedure for the use of a library resource collection.

7.4 Compare different methods for maintaining relevance of library information due to

changes over time.

Learning Outcome 8

 

Learning Outcome

Manage information technology requirements in a recreation workplace.

 

Assessment Criteria

8.1 List minimum information technology requirements for different facilities and services including:

-Health club

-Community recreation centre

-Swimming complex

-Specified sports club (eg. Golf club, football club or tennis club).

8.2 Prepare specifications for information technology equipment to perform a predetermined task.

8.3 List two alternative items of equipment to satisfy each of three different equipment

specifications.

8.4 Analyse costs compared with benefit for three alternative items of

equipment which satisfies given specifications.

8.5 Explain the procedure for acquisition of new information technology equipment,

in a specific workplace visited by the learner.

8.6 Prepare a training program outline, to train new staff in the use of an item

of information technology equipment, in accordance with the manufacturers

instructions.
